Genbei-gawa (River)
A pristine and peaceful local river in the heart of Mishima city
The beautiful Genbei-gawa is in the town of Mishima in Shizuoka prefecture. Many children play on this river, and it is visited by a lot of people during the firefly festival every year in June. A walking path made of wooden planks and stepping stones has been set up in the river, allowing visitors to enjoy a stroll while experiencing the soothing sound and relaxing rhythms of the murmuring stream.
At one time in the past, garbage had accumulated in this river because of over-tourism. However, many local people partnered with companies and city administrators to start activities called “Ground Work”. A new organization was born with this opportunity, and people made efforts to revive the beautiful environment around the river. As a result, it is possible to visit more wonderful nature than ever before. If you visit this local treasure, please help keep it clean by packing out your garbage.
